7a. Pelvic fins short, about half (or less) length of pectoral fins; Base of pectoral fin with very dark base (especially on upper part), pectoral fins usually with several dark concentric rings; in life, margins of pelvic, anal, caudal and dorsal fins lined with bright red, orange, yellow and occasionally white in parts (never entirely) (all colours become white on preservation); ventral parts of head appears marbled (Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Borneo).

b. Pelvic fins long, longer than half length of pectoral fins; base of pectoral fin light coloured, pectoral fins with or without dark concentric rings, rings when present not very dark; in life, margins of some or all pelvic, anal, caudal and dorsal fins lined with yellow and occasionally white, never red; ventral parts of head marbled, flecked or plain coloured .
